| I've not used PowerMatte, but at first glance it sounds similar to AE's Inner/Outer Key? (Although I assume much better, knowing Marco.) Inner/Outer key can produce surprisingly good results, but it does take a lot of set-up with the masks, especially in getting the close enough to the edges not to create false triggers.
A big difference comes in manually animating the masks vs. the automated edge tracking of Roto Brush (which generates the initial edge that Refine Edge then refines).

With this, it seems you loosely animate a garbage matte via paths and it uses trimasks to generate the edge. Looks like very similar technology but possibly not as fast as linking it to rotobrush
