powermatte is built into silhouette and uses trimaps - there was a siggraph white paper a few years back on this. I'd say it's a bit more stable and useful than inner/outer keyer but only works under ideal circumstances or where a high level of accuracy isn't necessary. It does take some garbage matte setup work but it's more forgiving than inner/outer.

With this, it seems you loosely animate a garbage matte via paths and it uses trimasks to generate the edge. Looks like very similar technology but possibly not as fast as linking it to rotobrush
