Sorry to hear that, I was laid off in 2010 and went full-time
freelancing from that point so I know where you are coming from.
Considering what I've been seeing in the market (Portland, OR at
least) that seems to be the new modus operandi. Keep a small core
unit and expand via freelancers when something significant comes
along. I would look into local freelance clubs or media associations
and see if that's happening in your area.
A good website to look at is http://www.freelanceswitch.com. It's
mostly for webdevs, writers and graphic designers but has a lot of
good information as well.
Good luck to you!

P.S. I know Trish Meyer swears by this but I am having a heck of a
time getting my brain into Quickbooks for managing my business. It's
like my right hemisphere is rejecting the notion that I have to
manage a business now.

If anybody knows of
opportunities either fulltime or freelance, please let me
know. I would prefer to stay in Pennsylvania, but will
consider anything.
Thank you
