Sorry to hear that Mike - but a big part of me is excited for you.

I waited around at a superb paying cush job hoping they'd lay me off so I could actually do what I was made to do. But it never happened - no kick in the butt for me. So I quit an amazing job and went on my own.

It was the best thing I've ever done. Something about working for yourself that can't be topped.

Someone had told me your worst day freelancing is better than your best day working at the office - and I've found that's absolutely true.

Network, network, network. Be eager. Be appreciative. Improve your skills. Show your work. Go to the park for lunch.

You'll be alright. It's a grand new adventure.

Some freelance business advice (this has worked for me for years)

Keep things simple. I run nearly the whole business through a dedicated American Express card, which keeps my expenses in order and separate from my personal life (I also keep a VISA card for when Amex isn't accepted). A nice bonus are the frequent flyer miles I accrue this way-- I haven't paid for my NAB airfare in 10 years). Come tax time I download and import my Amex statements into quicken (quicken 2007!), categorize them, print a report and give that to my accountant (I am a subchapter S corporation).

As for taxes, I have a payroll service handle all my withholding and filing. I'm the only employee and it costs about $40 whenever I run a paycheck (monthly, when I can) but at the end of the year I've paid in what I should and have all the paperwork done to boot. No muss, no fuss, worth every penny.

Good luck freelancing, I'm proof it's doable despite the odds. :-)
