AE West was awesome - but it might have been because I knew nothing about AE and it was the first time meeting a lot of you guys! I was like "That's Trish and Chris Meyer! In PERSON!"

Motion is super awesome - it has a great 'community' feel to it whereas Siggraph has more of a disparate feel. Siggraph's very cool too - but the Motion feel is kind of 'we're all in this together let's help each other out' kind of thing and that's fantastic for relationships and sanity in these crazy fields of design and vfx.

100% agree about AE West.  Not sure what the magic combination was, but that was definitely the best design conference I've been to….

I think that may have been more of a timing thing than anything.  Sort of the first years of AE being taken really seriously in the industry overall and not just a secret piece of software that was used when the client couldn't afford a Flame….

Agreed with the assessment of SIGGRAPH and Motion. I've been to both and like them.

But I have to say the greatest AE conference of all time was sadly a one-off. The After Effects West conference, held in Pasadena in 2001 and produced by Lynda Weinman was abso-friggen-lutely the greatest AE conference of my entire professional career. It was really an awesome learning+community event that also came at a pretty amazing time of revolution and discovery of possibilities in this neck of the industry. I would love to see it replicated if at all possible.

SIGGRAPH tends to skew more heavy tech/nuts and bolts of graphics creation.  Where as the Motion Conference skews much more toward creative process and inspiration.  So it all really depends on what you are hoping to get out of your experience.  If you're really into the nitty gritty of particle simulation and 3d motion tracking, etc, SIGGRAPH is probably more for you.  There is definitely a HOW-TO component to the Motion Conference, but your not likely to drill into the finer points of ambient occlusion and subsurface light scattering there…

Bumping this topic to generate some feedback. I'm looking into going to SIGGRAPH again this year. I've been 5 times in the past 15 years. I always get a lot out of it but just thought I would ask how it might be compared to the Motion Conference. I know that conference will be favored on this list but I'm especially keen to hear from someone who has been to both shows. My tastes lean toward VFX and 3D with an interest in things like particles and simulation over pure motion design.

Anyone care to share experiences?
