What is your budget for this camera? What is your priority for the hi-speed mode? While there are a few new cameras with optional hi-speed mode, I'd suggest that unless you are looking for true 400-1000 fps hispeed, you remove that from the list because it really limits your options. The things you can do with AE and twixtor / reel smart motion blur will cover the gap, as long as the camera does decent 60p at 1080.

If you really need decent hi-speed footage at those framerates, you are probably better off renting a solution than owning a camera with limited uses. That being said, the casio Excilim hi-speed series is really the only camera system in the prosumer price range that does good slow-mo. And even then you need tons of light and accepting cropped HD frames for 600 fps+.

Thanks to all who replied.

I was entranced by the slo-mo in the Street video at the Metropolitan Museum in NY. http://www.metmuseum.org/metmedia/video/collections/ph/street

Don't expect to get anything as good as used there, but I'd like to at least be able to get into the game. The casio tempts me, as does the  Panasonic Lumix GH3  -- was hoping for under 2K with lenses but am open. Because I don't work on a project basis I need to own stuff.

Weight is also an issue as I push into my '70s. I do a lot of nature shooting that absolutely requires a tripod, and a great camera, lenses and tripod do me little good if I can't carry them along with my suitcase.

The prosumer defacto "standard" right now is the Canon 5D mark III which will run you $2,500 - 4000 depending on lenses and options. I personally own a Nikon d5100 for personal still photography, but the video is quite excellent with a good prime. The autofocus is pretty good and you're looking at under $1k

For handheld video I own a canon Vixia HF100, because it's lightweight, has excellent compression, good low light performance and amazing autofocus. You can find it used for under $500, which is really great. It is perfect for shooting concerts and has all the features you requested minus the hispeed. However it does use .mxf format which can be a pain to convert.

What do you have to go through to convert? How good are the optics?

Hi,

I'm looking for a camera with as many as possible of the below features. Currently using a Lumix LX 7, which does surprisingly well for a $400 camera mainly designed for stills/

1.      Compact
2.      Tapeless
3.      1080 24p. 30 p. (60 i optional)
4.      Better (i.e. less)  compression than the 34:1 of my Lumix  LX - 7.
5.      Mac- compatible software.
6.      No 4 gig file limit.
7.      High speed shooting for slow mo.
8.      Good optics -- ideally comparable with Lumix
9.      Better zoom ratio than LX 7
10.     Ideally can shoot high quality 5 MP or better stills.
11.     Long shutter speed shooting for in camera blurs
12.     Good low light performance.

My Lumix LX 7 has all but 4, 5, 6, 7, 9

Thanks.
