Subject: AI path won't paste to AE position

Trying to paste path from AI to position in AE.
I have the prefs for preserve path selected in AI.
I select the "position" text in AE, I even tried setting an initial
key in position and yet it still pastes in masks.
Using cs5.5. Any suggestions?
