what I meant to say is CC is the new CS - it looks like the Creative Cloud is the only way to go - no more purchasing an in perpetuity license.

Yes. You can still buy and use CS6 applications, and you will be able to do so for a long time.

Also, we are working on a bug-fix update for CS6 now, so I can confirm that part from my own work.
