I love pixelmator. its cheap it looks great, can do a lot of thing PS can, but it is more a competitor to elements than the full version of PS. But then, for 90% of what I need to do I can do in CS1, I rarely need any of the later features. And I've never used the 3D or video editing features.

I own and let my boy use pixelmator, but I have PS so no reason not to use that.

A colleague mentioned they have been using Pixelmator as a substitute for Photoshop (http://www.pixelmator.com). Anyone played with that app? What is it missing compared to Photoshop?

Thanks,

James

Smoke on Mac for 3500 USD is a great software. With great integration of 3d files. A bit different workflow. But deffenetly as good as AE.

what competitors? Nuke? at $4,000 per seat? Motion aka iMovie: animation edition?

I see where you're coming from, but there is nothing even remotely like AE for our market, in terms of similar price and features.

After seeing another of those doomsday forum threads about the Adobe Creative Cloud (this on CGtalk.com), someone mentioned Hitfilm 2 UItimate (!!!) as an alternative to AE. I downloaded a trial on my old home computer just to check it out.

Well... it has a clear inspiration from AE in how it is built up UI wise, and in features and implementation of these they have copied the most popular AE plugins like Element 3d, Optical Flares, Keylight, Particular, colorista (v1), it is bundled with a version of Mocha. It even has simple builtin editor, something i have wanted in AE for a loooong time, and if that is not enough there is a Dynamic Link like feature to Sony Vegas. ... And it is all mostly accellerated via the GPU so in many cases realtime 1080p playback with effects even on my old home computer.

I must say i was pretty impressed with what i saw.
...BUT...
i could never see myself or any pro AE users i know use this instead of AE, it is lacking sooo much of the UI refinement that AE worked up during the last 20 years, although that also still could use some polish. Hitfilm is missing too many features that we as pro AE users rely on everyday.

Right now it is Windows only, but they have just announced a kickstarter to get it ported to mac too. Coincidence that this was annonced right after the the Adobe CC annoncement? ;-)

I just wish that AE had more of the realtime playback of Hitfilm. :-D.. but i will stay with AE either way, thank you!...
