BGRender is essential. can't recommend it enough.

Also, look at Lloyd's BG Render script. This is the fastest way to render and will out perform CS6 mp renders every time, plus it renders in the background, which is a nice bonus.

Just making sure:
Are you using 11.0.2 and not the 11.0 or 11.0.1 version of AE CS6?  At one point in the not-too-distant past I found the Adobe site still had previous installers on the website (as part of the Production Premium download, in my case).

So if you are using a trial version, make sure that you install the latest updates from Adobe.

Is anyone else currently experiencing slower renders in CS6 versus CS5? I'm trying to get to the bottom of this because we'd really like to use CS6 but the render speed makes it impractical.

Thanks,

I'm seeing a significant slow down in AE CS6 vs CS5.5 reders. Lots of google hits about this last year but not many currently. Todd, I followed your blog posting on RAM assignment and core scheduling but it didn't seem to get me back to CS5.5 render speeds.
MacPro 12 core, OS X 10.7.5, 2.66GHz, 32GB RAM, SSD boot/application disk.
CS6 updated to latest with these AE RAM and Multiprocessing prefs:
8GB RAM for other apps
24GB for CS
8 cores for other apps
3GB per core
6 cores for AE
It's a credit roll with a pre-rendered motion background and PIP of outtakes/bloopers. The PIP has a lens effect, drop shadow and color tint. Output is a 23.976 ProRes 422HQ QT onto a Fibre Channel disk.
In CS5.5, this project renders to the Fibre disk in 21 min.
Rendering this same project in CS6 takes ~70 min.
Are the above settings okay? What else should I be looking at? I'm happy to provide other details.
Thanks,
-Terry
