One example of where the update of Mac OS caused problems but a full installation didn't:

When updating from 10.7 to 10.8, some GPU driver components don't get properly updated; but a fresh installation of 10.8 works fine. We've seen this quite a lot when troubleshooting customer problems.

Keep that in mind if you have seen problems with GPU features when updating.
