Thanks Robert and Teddy and everyone!

It sounds more and more like perhaps RAM and one more SSD would be the best right now. Unfortunately the config below has proven not to want to overclock, not sure why but I never got it to overclock...

I managed to dig out a more specific current spec (but The 1st hard disk has been replaced by an SSD):

Case COOLERMASTER SILEO 500 QUIET MID TOWER CASE
Processor (CPU) Intel® Core™i7 Processor i7-930 (2.80GHz) 4.8GTs/8MB Cache

2nd DVD/BLU-RAY Drive NONE
Memory Card Reader INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc)
Power Supply 600W Quiet Quad Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan (£59)
Processor Cooling COOLIT ECO A.L.C (ADVANCED LIQUID COOLER) (£59)
Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD)
Network Facilities WIRELESS N 300Mbps PCI CARD (£16)
USB Options 6 x USB 2.0 PORTS @ BACK PANEL (MIN 2 FRONT PORTS) AS STANDARD

Operating System Genuine Windows 7 Professional 64 Bit - inc DVD & Licence (£108)

I’m not sure if the mobo supports more than 16GB ram, but I will check that.

I also could move a lot of stuff away to clean up space on the SERIAL ATA hard drives (7,200 rpm).

How about RAID? Is that important for AE and what if so would that be SSD raid?

And i will agree with all above. Get as much RAM as possible for the amount of money you want to spend, it should be fairly cheap to put in 48GB, and a SSD to the disk cache. You will not want to turn back to the old setup when you start working with AE with huge amounts of RAM and a fast SSD :-)

...only thing is that cleaning the SSD disk cache is a all or nothing, you will have to loose 500GB perfectly fine disk cache because of 1 frame that AE cached wrong :-(

RAM and SSD make a really big difference especially if you do multi-proc rendering.

I agree with Mylenium that more RAM and a bigger SSD would be a good idea. Both will help with overall speed, especially if you use the SSD for the After Effects disk cache.
