Teddy –

thank you for your advices. As you said, every card seems to be different.

Here are my new results:

2x X5550 @ 2.67ghz, 48GB RAM, GTX Titan @ stock speed = 4:16 min

2x X5550 @ 2.67ghz, 48GB RAM, GTX Titan OC @ 1110mhz = 3:56 min

Now it renders 20 secs faster. ;-)

I changed the GPU clock offset to +100 MHz and left the fan speed checkbox on ‚auto‘.

Any other changes (fan speed @ 75% or higher, higher GPU clock offset, higher mem clock offset) led to slower rendering times.

Here are my EVGA Precision X settings:

Power Target: 100% (default)

Temp Target: 80° (default)

GPU clock offset: +100 MHz (default = 0)

GPU clock offset: +0 MHz (default)

Fan Speed: Auto (default)

Voltage & Tweaks: default

 Rodrigo -

I'm using Asus GPU tweak because the card was from Asus but the process should be the same. I'd highly recommend grabbing GPU-Z http://www.techpowerup.com/gpuz/ and switching to watch the sensors tab while overclocking. I find the manufacturer's monitoring tools to be lacking. Then I'd load up the AE benchmark file I posted in the beginning of this thread to test the tweaking.

So I discovered two very important things when doing this - fan speed is critical for OC on the titan, because the card monitors its own temp separate from the OC interface, and 2) Don't touch the memory clock or voltage settings. At all. When first overclocking I'd notice that as soon as temps hit 75c+ the card would throttle down. Then I loaded up GPUZ and saw that happen in real time, the clock speed would jump between 640 and 900 mhz seemingly at random. This was when I had been playing with the min. voltage and memory clock.

So first set the fan speed to manual and bump it to 65-75% fan speed. apply setting and watch the temps drop. Instead of thinking like an old card, where you are giving it explicit instruction to OC, you have to think of giving the Titan "suggestions" - you provide optimal conditions for it to overclock itself!

It has very intelligent heat and voltage regulators outside of the user's control. So after you give it the thermal overhead by forcing the fan faster, keep increasing the GPU clock in increments of say, 20 mhz. Now because this not an "explicit" speed for the clock to run at, you can push this pretty far. After increasing fan speed I got the boost clock to 1110 mhz, and very stable. The card set its own voltage to around 1050mV.  No fluctuations in clock speed while rendering in AE. This killed the benchmark at 3:40, my fastest time ever. Watch the clock speed in GPU-Z to verify it's staying pegged.

I'd love to see your results. Every card is different so you may have to play around with it.

Hi Teddy,

I have had the same experience. My OC-settings led to slower renders.

Do you use ‘EVGA Precision X’ for overclocking?

Yes, pleeease. ;-)

Same here with AE, 3ds max and mudbox.

I just got a GTX Titan and wanted to post my numbers. I had a very interesting experience overclocking the titan. It does not behave like any other card. The card itself decides most variables. I needed to have GPU-Z open to figure out what was going on; initially, when overclocking, I was getting SLOWER renders than at "stock speed." this is because the hardware manages boost largely by itself at "stock" and actually does quite a good job at it. You need to tweak very specifically to get a stable OC. If anyone wants to know more I'd be happy to share. But so far, I'm very impressed with the Titan's performance in AE, c4d and maya. Especially when factoring in a) it is a single-gpu solution b) 6GB RAM more than any consumer card and c) low power and heat for its class.

intel 3930K @ 4.6 ghz, with Titan @ stock speed = 3:57
intel 3930K @ 4.6 ghz, with Titan OC @ 1110 mhz base clock = 3:40

doesn't seem like much, but it's actually quite a boost when considering longer renders.
I will be testing this against a 2x GTX 580 in SLI, but still waiting on my second card for my second workstation.

right now

GTX 580 3GB I am getting 5 min 5 sec with GPU clock at 925 mhz, or 5:45 at stock speed. testbed is intel 3770k @ 4.7 ghz

Hi Jim,

first you have to copy the file ‘raytracer_supported_cards.txt’ on to the desktop.

Then type this in the list of supported cards:

GeForce GTX TITAN

Save and copy that file back into the ‘Support Files’ folder.

My titan works fine on CS6 / Win7.

Did you have any trouble getting AE to recognize the Titan? I’m just getting ‘incompatible device or driver’.   :-\    (running Windows 8… which I don’t recommend upgrading to)

Drivers are updated, Premiere seems to recognize it (I listed it the supported_cards file), but AE is showing CUDA grayed out and won’t use the GPU. Not sure what’s up. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers,

Jim

So a while ago I posted an AE graphic card benchmark at creative cow that has gotten a lot of responses, so I threw together a quick, readable spreadsheet of the results. I was mainly curious about compute performance of the new titan card vs. last gen 5xx cards and the kepler 6xx series. I wanted to see if the titan was worth the extra $1,000, because it is in fact a consumer version of the nvidia k20 tesla which costs over $3k. The results were very interesting. The original thread is here

http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/2/1019120#1035979

And I have posted the spreadsheets (and benchmark file) on my server at

http://www.teddygage.com/AEBENCHCS6/

What I would love to add are any results with the newer quadros (5000 / 6000) or any tesla card.

Furthermore I'd be interested to hear any thoughts from 3D users about their experiences using an AMD 7950 vs nvidia consumer card for viewport 3D (using zbrush / maya / or C4D especially)

The amount of C4D work I've been doing has only increased in the last year and I can imagine when CS7 comes out that's only going to increase. viewport accuracy is going to be of a larger concern and nvidia is using a poor strategy to differentiate the quadros by gimping compute performance in the 6xx consumer cards.

Would also love to hear any thoughts on these results, I'll refrain from saying what I think until people get a chance to check it out.
