Thanks, Jim.  Small claims court is a crap shoot best avoided.  In my experience, judges tend to favor larger businesses, no matter how weak their case.

Small Claims Court
Small claims court offers ordinary people the chance to resolve small disputes at a low cost and without a lot of complication. With a little education, you can represent yourself from start to finish in small claims court. Learn how here.

I've used their book, "Everybody's Guide to Small Claims Court," to collect from people who owed me money. A key goal of the book is to help you favorably resolve the dispute BEFORE you go into the courtroom. Sensible, clear, no-nonsense advice on that.

Has anyone ever gone to small claims court and won, and managed to get paid from the judgement. i had go through that rigamarole last year for $800 for some writing I had done for a website. It was such a pain to go through the process and then at the end of it, even if the judge rules in your favour, there is absolutely nothing to force the other party to pay you. Has anyone any experience with that?

unfortunately yes I've hauled bad debt clients to court quite a bit when I was in NY, probably 4 or 5 times over 10 years. I then went 12 years  with generally good clients that made regular payments, then over the last 2 years I've had to file 3 cases, one in real civil court for serious money that may settle in a couple of weeks.

I've only had one actual time where some one took it to trial before the judge....
