I'm not 100% certain of the time it took because Spinifex were producing various bits & pieces for different projects - including at least 3 building projections for Vivid if not more - and I've got no idea how long everyone was working on the different bits.  And there's always other projects going on as well.

In regards to the Opera House projections, it was broken down into sections that were worked on mostly by individuals.  The overall concept and creative direction was done by Jonny Old (one of the Spinifex Creatives), but it was completed well before I started.  It was quite a big thing for the Opera House projections to be awarded to a local Sydney base company, as in the past it's always been given to overseas agencies.   Spinifex were invited to do it this year based on the strength of work they'd done in previous years for other buildings.

The opening music section was completed solely by Jamie Tufrey using Cinema 4D and After Effects - I'm not sure how long it took but probably at least 3 weeks.

The pinball section was animated in 3DS Max by at least 2 3D artists (maybe 3?), then composited in After Effects although the comping was minimal.  All of the animated lights in the pinball section were manually animated lights in 3DS Max!

The Neon section is the part I was responsible for, so it's very flattering to get Brian's feedback.  This was produced entirely in After Effects and took me about 3 weeks.  I'm currently editing a video tutorial on how I did it all.

The light streaks after that were produced in Cinema 4D and comped in AE, and I'm not even sure how the polygon section was done but I think it was done by 1 3D animator in 3DS Max.

The skins / chameleon section was done in Cinema 4D - all mograph stuff - by Dan Harkness.  I don't know how long it took but probably 3 - 4 weeks.

The dancers were shot against greenscreen at Spinifex  and edited in After Effects by Will Skinner.

The core Spinifex studio team has about 3 full-time 3D guys, 3 full-time AE guys, an AE / Nuke / IT guru and 2 Creative Directors.  On top of that there are a few of us who are regular freelancers so on a typical day there's probably up to 15 people floating around the studio.

Cheers,

-Chris
