We certainly haven’t abandoned (to use your word) the ray-traced 3D renderer. In fact, it’s that feature set that I’m working on on this holiday weekend.

My point was simply that the current feature set of simple extrusions and bevels, bendable layers, and environment  layers in After Effects CS6 (11.0) and After Effects CC (12.0) is useful only for simple motion graphics---and you can do more with something like Invigorator or Cinema 4D.

We want to use the ray-tracer for what it’s good for and use Cinema 4D for what it’s good for. At the moment, the former is good at using the native After Effects shape layer and text layer animation systems to do simple motion graphics with realistic reflections and refractions.

Todd, despite somehow breaking gmail with your reply, this brings up a very interesting point, and a question i was going to ask. You may not be able to answer but ill ask anyway: with the upcoming features of c4d integration, is there going to be any more work put into the raytrace engine? Or has that been superseded by the focus on c4d? With a little more work i was very excited by the potential for the rt features, it would be a shame to abandon development of that. However it would make perfect sense considering the overlap of functionality...

From this page, there ar links to tutorials and examples that show these features in use:

Keep in mind that this feature set is only intended for simple things, and more complex 3D projects should make use of other software, such as Invigorator or Cinema 4D. The ray-traced 3D feature set in CS6 was a way for us to take a first step and figure out what people really wanted and needed from 3D in After Effects. In that way, it was the forerunner to the Cimema 4D integration in After Effects CC (12.0).

Does anybody find this useful?

Just wondering.  I use Element and Invigorator for my modest 3D needs, which is mostly simple logo treatments, charts, graphs, etc. from Ai files.  Invigorator seems to be the best at that, because of the way it treats Layers and colors.  I can't figure out a way to add a texture to an Ae extruded layer.  Am I missing something?

Can anybody provide some links to projects where they used Ae Ray-Traced 3D to good effect?
