I've been following this thread since this morning and I think there may a bit too much concern on gmail.  Yes, they do some marketing based on where you go and clearly based on words used in emails.  I see those ads all the time.  I do not think they are actually collecting email content - that would be illegal.  Also, pretty much all web based emails do.  I've been using Gmail since it first came out without an issue.  Also, one of your comments had to do with customer support for email.  I think the bulk of your customer support issues would be directed to your ISP for problems and email is pretty straight forward.  You have an email account, you understand the max files size (25MB for Gmail), and you send and receive email.  As long as it's doing that, no need for customer support.

I had more problems using the actual ISP email systems than I've ever had with a web based one.  So, while Verizon is my ISP, I stopped using that email over a decade ago for web based email.  Works perfectly.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks, Bruce.  I did a little research into gmail, and they seem to do a bit
of spying for marketing purposes.  They're naturally unclear about how far they take things.  It could just be following your web movement.  Then again, they could be scouring email content.

I would recommend Google. While there isn't the same type of tech support that you might get with another company, there is good support and the service is good enough that I've never heard anyone have a problem with it.

Can someone please recommend a reliable email service?  I don't mind
paying, as long as it isn't exorbitant.    I'm probably the last earthlink customer
on the planet.

I was thinking about Gmail, but there doesn't seem to be tech support.
aol and yahoo are flooded with ads.
