This seems like a good solution to me - leave QuickTime out of it all together.  And there are many other MP4 players to choose from in addition to VLC.

Another movie format I've been checking out is WebM, an open source format sponsored by Google.  It will soon support 4:4:4, alpha channel, depth channel, and maybe 10-bit.  Seems like it could be a good open source replacement for ProRes if it gets wider adoption.  You can currently play WebM directly in Firefox, Chrome, VLC, and others.

They have a companion still image format, WebP, which supports lossless compression too.  Unfortunately, the movie format doesn't currently do lossless.
