I'd like to second what Tim said.  You can either pay up front to shoot greenscreen right and have it look good with a little post work, or you can cheap out up front and spend a ton in post trying to save it from looking horrible. If production screws up the shoot, making it look "not horrible" is the best you can hope for.

yeah - I alway think green screen cost about the same amount whether you hire a pro-shooter or not - it's just where you want to spend the money, on the shoot or in post. of course paying more for the shoot may improve the overall look easier than than getting "good enough" in post. but all this seem fairly obvious, green screen shooting is becoming the desktop publishing revolution - I mean if you've got a camera and a green surface, viola.

and thanks Todd for the helpful answers I'll have to pass those off to our post manager - he's always looking for info to pass on to our directors/DPs.

Thank you, Todd.  Jonas' link is excellent for shooters.

The weisenheimer replies amuse me, and you're all exactly right that clients should hire professionals to do this stuff.  But, trying to force clients to serve my wishes doesn't seem to be too practical all the time.

I charge by the hour, so I made more money trying to fix their crap than I would have if the first eyedropper click resulted in a perfect key.  They were trying to save money by hiring some local kid at a distant location, and didn't want to pay to fly an experienced shooter.  I'm sure my extra time cost them less than air fare.  But, I'm trying to do them a favor and give them some tips to improve the outcome for the next time.

Thanks, everybody.

Jonas Hummelstrand has an excellent resource on his site:

That resource and some other good ones are linked to from the “Shooting and acquiring footage for keying” section of After Effects Help:

Can anybody suggest a link that has the most authoritative, comprehensive tip sheet for green screen shooting that I can send to this particular client the next time they consider doing it?
