I would make a very wide comp and do the "smoke"/art move with an offset = (so it is looping). In the main comp I would then use the puppet tools to distort the smoke = in the shape you want (or Mesh Warp) You could animate the position, scale etc to move the smoke the way you = want since the "smoke" is also moving within the distorted comp you'll get a distinct designed look you're after.
