Man.. I'm just starting to mess around with all the ins and outs from c4d to AE and back.. there's a lot to like so far..
This is just an off the top of my head email rant about my quick joyride with it.. haven't really delved in too deep yet, but it's already a blast.
I'm really digging the fact that I can build a whole scene in C4d, including a camera.. then bring it in and use it as is.. but then, if I want to tweak the camera move, I can just extract the scene data (which will include any lights, cameras, or external compositing objects.. I can then edit the camera in AE, and when I'm done, merge that new camera move back into the scene..
Also.. I made a simple test with AE.. imported an MP4.. turned on 3d layer, and made a camera move around it..
exported it to a C4D file.. and in C4d, there's a plane object with a material applied that is that mp4.. it comes in like a champ..
goes backward as well.. took that exact C4d scene and brought it back into AE.. the video textures render through Cineware just fine, and you can watch em as you work back in AE..
this also works great if you'd rather setup your scene in C4d with an external compositing tag for, say, a screen replacement.. and in AE you get your solid shape, in the place it needs to be, and you can still see how it relates to everything else, and adjust camera angles and stuff without needing to go back and export another AEC and another C4d Sequence as well..
HUGE time saver.. and I've only been messing around for about an hour so far..
Mograph cloners and stuff seem to pull in just fine with no real slow down.. Software and Standard(Final) renderers both show cloner objects properly.. Standard Draft looks like it turns off cloners.. possibly mograph in general.
honestly, I feel like a kid at christmas with this new version of AE.. there's so much that's added, but it all feels so intuitive and proper.. I find myself just thinking of stuff to do with it when I'm not at my computer.. feels like the first time I started learning AE. The whole creative process is flipped upside down..
I can DEFINITELY see myself using c4d for page-turns/pamphlet animations now. Also creating faux 3d product boxes and the like will be much easier to do properly in C4d without needing to constantly go back and forth between 3d renders and AEC files.. Gone are the days of "itemTurn1_v3" folder filled with an image sequence, and then needing to render a whole new folder full of images just to change the camera move, etc.
Only couple of drawbacks I've found so far...that would be a great addition in an update to the C4d Export from AE
audio coming over from AE to C4D in the export... in C4d I normally have to create a null, go in the timeline view and choose Create > Special Track > Sound , to add any sound as a reference in C4d for timing usage. Would be nice if any audio files I have in the AE project would auto-create these special tracked nulls in C4d for me.
Also Cineware only currently uses the standard C4d renderer for AE's viewing... Physical Renderer and the Toon Renderer are not available, as aren't any custom 3rd party C4d renderers I presume (like VRay or Maxwell)
This really feels like a solid premiere of a feature (Cineware / C4d Exporter) without having a crippled "we're just trying something new" feel to it..
I haven't even begun to start checking out the other new features of AE yet..
