for drives/storage, 256gb ssd for system and apps, 60gb ssd for cache, two 3tb drives for projects.
the price on the 3930k isn't likely to decrease for a while, they are still a great cpu, and in demand, i don't see haswell being super desireable for desktop machines, more of a mobile solution,

Thanks Rik & Teddy,
Rik, What about the p9x79 LE vs p9x79? There seems to be two models of the
p9x79?
I am also thinking if I should go for 1 x 240 GB for OS and 2 x 120 GB in
Stripe RAID, or 1 x 120 GB for OS and 2 x 240 GB SSD in Stripe RAID.
Also, any suggestions on INTEL 520 SSD vs KINSTON HYPERX 3K in reliability
/ performance?
I am leaning against the i7 3930K 6 core for my upgrade, although I don’t
know when it’s the right time to buy! Any price drops on these components
anytime soon?
Thanks Anders

Effects work for a budget of $1500?
i'll
second that. i just built a rig around the 3930k and the asus p9x79 deluxe, and
i have the cpu running at a steady, safe, 4.7ghz.
Sandybridge, Ivybridge and haswell all are much easier to over
clock than the first gen i7 chips in the 9xx series. Additionally, new
motherboards have turbo boost or easy OC functions that make overclocking a)
very easy b) nearly impossible to screw up. I'd go with the asus line, as they
have a number of failsafes built in. In terms of pre-built machines, it all
depends on what you're willing to spend and who you buy it from. I'd go with a
small builder for savings. but you will get less tech support,
obviously.
The advantage of haswell is less heat output and less energy consumed.
Great for mobile devices and laptops but not many advantages in a workstation
where psu isn't an issue.
IMO the best chip out there is still the sandybridge core i7 3930K,
because it has six cores, overclocks VERY well, and generates much less heat
than the ivy bridge chips. My ivy bridge machine runs almost 20c hotter than
the six core for whatever reason. So if you can find or build a machine with
the asus p9 motherboard and a core i7 3930K for a little more money, I'd say
it's worth it.
