Hi all,
I was surprised by something a work colleague encountered this week. I didn't see the project, but I believe it was quite long, with many layers of video in it.
When he initially went to render it it looked like being a 48 hour render (this is after the render has been going for several hours). This was too long, and he guessed that the many instances of the curves plugin were slowing everything down. He stopped the render and went through the project and replaced all the curves plugins with levels instead, to get the same effect. Then the entire project rendered in about 2 hours.
That's a massive difference in speed - this is AE v5, so not something affected by cache.
I can understand that curves may be slightly slower to render than levels - but I would never have expected such a massive difference. And my colleague is something of an AE guru and said he had experienced this before, and that he's always found curves to be a slow plugin to render. I'd never really noticed...
Any thoughts?
-Chris
