GTX 5XX series worked in 10.6.8 i believe but you had to download the quadro driver from nvidiia.
10.7.5 and 10.8.4 i believe have drivers for the GTX 6XX
some cards need 6 pin some 8 pin.

the 6XX series cards use less power than the 5XX alhtough their CUDA performance is lower as well

stock PC cards will driver your monitor without any flashing but wont show the osx boot screen.

you can install any of these headless just for CUDA accelaration

In looking at this spreadsheet and searching the forums, can a MacPro 5,1 8 core take advantage of the 5XX Nvidia line without any mods?
I recall the Nvidia drivers being out there for 10.7 & 10.8 but I'm reading about 8pin to 6pin power adapters, EFI?  I think we would need to lose the ATI 5770?

Any clarification from the list would be great.

I've used the i7 with 680mx

It is quick. I'd recommend putting in 32gb ram and works well.

I work at another place that also has a tb ssd off the back for cache which works well

The 680mx is nice. It can work w the raytracer but it is not better than most desktop cuda cards for the macpro

Hi Lachlan,

The new quad core iMacs benchmark almost as highly as the 8 core mac pro in CPU based benchmarks so should be fairly good for AE rendering, they also have GeForce 680MX cards which are better than anything you can get in a Mac Pro bar the quadro K5000 and Titan for ray tracing.

We have many customers using them for AE work and although they are not quite as fast as the highest end Mac Pros they are still fast fluid machines for AE work and a good stop gap.

If you do use one for a stop gap you could use it as a 2nd display for the Mac Pro if you get one, when using an iMac in this way you can even make use of the computer inside it to offload rendering from you Mac Pro.

I’d love to try to hold out and wait for the new Mac Pro, but I think I need to get a machine that can run the latest OS and latest software.

I’ve been stuck since many of the tools I use will die if If I upgrade.

How many of you are running AE on a “loaded” iMac? Does it work well?

I know I’ve walked into production companies for meetings and ALL I see are iMac’s editing video.

This may be an practical stop-gap solution. Let me know if you use an iMac for AE and it works well.

Thanks.
