Actually, if the OP created the layer directly via the Animation Preset (instead of first creating a Text Layer) then there is a very strong probability that he would have to adjust Transform>Position and a less but also significant probability that he would also need to adjust the position Animator Property.
FWIW, the quickest way to customizing a Text Animation Preset is with the UU key. Thereafter, it's pretty quick to discern which properties require adjustments, which Animator Property and/or Range Selector(s) to add onto existing Animator Groups and if new Animator Group(s) + Properties should be created.

The solution is adding Opacity as a property to the text animation ...
No disagreement with what you're suggesting - but I think the O.P. was trying to fix by adjusting:
Transform > position
not:
Text > Animator1 > Range selector1 > position
