I've been asking for cross-platform open source "pro" movie files for years. ProRes is cool and all but Apple could totally drop the ball on us at any point. I have lots of material I created in years past with various codecs that I can't open anymore. OpenEXR is a great model to look toward. It's well supported by most apps and has great features.
