I couldn't agree more (says the OpenEXR plug-in guy).  Notice that OpenEXR actually has a selection of codecs available, but because they all come with the source distribution you never worry about using any one of them.  If a new codec comes out (last one was in 2007) or the format adds features (like it just did last April), tell your app developer to update to the latest library and they should get the new stuff without doing much work at all.  I will be using OpenEXR as my model for sure.

I guess there's not much need for proprietary capture codecs now that we've all gone tapeless, but I know my design will intentionally not include a plug-in way to add new codecs.  Instead I'll encourage other parties to add their codecs to the open source pool.
