It does look interesting. It's only available as a Windows codec, but the source is available so it could be ported elsewhere.
One issue is that it is licensed under the GPL. This project of mine is going to use the more-permissive BSD license, like OpenEXR does. The GPL prevents commercial software vendors from including the code in products they ship. Unless there's a really good reason, I'm going to stay away from it.
Maybe this guy could be convinced to change to BSD.
