Lloyd, that's exactly what I mean and is incredibly useful, thanks! So the point control must be located at 0,0 of the layer positioned immediately above the parent for it to be effective?

The "Parent" layer has an XY Offset slider that you can use to offset the "child" layers in X or Y.  To add more child layers simply duplicate one of the child layers.  You just need to make sure that all the "child" layers are immediately below the "parent" layer. Make sure that there is no space in .position and also replace n with the true name of the slider. Easiest thing to do is delete the n, put your cursor where it used to be, and drag the pick-whip (swirl icon near expression textbox) to the name of the slider effect.
