0,0 means that the child layers are offset by 0 pixels on X and Y, ie all stacked on top of each other. As you increase or decrease that amount they will offset from each other by that amount. And yes, the expression is written with the assumption that the parent layer is immediately above all the child layers in the timeline.

The "Parent" layer has an XY Offset slider that you can use to offset the "child" layers in X or Y. To add more child layers simply duplicate one of the child layers. You just need to make sure that all the "child" layers are immediately below the "parent" layer. Let me know if you have any questions.

Make sure that there is no space in .position and also replace n with the true name of the slider. Easiest thing to do is delete the n, put your cursor where it used to be, and drag the pick-whip (swirl icon near expression textbox) to the name of the slider effect.
