I think MXF is a the best choice since it's the wrapper used for J2K which
is the standard in cinema and library of congress is onboard:

A film is - or should be - more like music than like fiction. It should be a
progression of moods and feelings. The theme, what's behind the emotion, the
meaning, all that comes later.

Well, obviously the whole point of this is that it will be a movie format,
but otherwise done in an OpenEXR style in the sense that it will be open and
the codecs will all be open as well.
I think I can tell you right now that I refuse to use QuickTime, possibly
for purely emotional reasons. It represents proprietary format + codecs,
single-platform, and cozying up to patent farms like MPEG LA. This new
project will only use patent-free codecs.
After doing some more research I think maybe using MXF as the container is
the way to go. Ogg and Matroska (and QuickTime) seem more designed for
playback while MXF was designed for production. The only downside in my
mind is that it's a SMPTE standard as opposed to Matroska which is an open
standard. Maybe some people would actually prefer that.
But as I said, I would re-brand it, making a new name and a new extension
for what is an MXF container limited to a list of free codecs. Anyone got
ideas for a name? How about:
Professional Open Movie Format (.pom)
OpenMOV (.omv)
OpenMovie (.omv)
Others?
