sorry for reviving this old thread, but I just figured out the solution today. Thanks for the suggestions, both of those were definitely out of my price range. Newegg is having a one day special on 64mb cache 7200 seagate NAS drives, and a special on this synology 4-bay NAS RAID, so I pulled the trigger on that. Along with my 5 port 100/1000 ethernet switch, this is going to make network rendering 10x faster and easier. As well as archiving / backup many TB of old projects

Having taken on two jobs simultaneously, because I am not smart, I am now kicking myself for not having both workstations set up with a speedy NAS, and synced plugins & scripts between the two machines so I could do either network renders or render each project separately. Of course deadlines I was expecting would be weeks apart are more like hours. Looking for a pc based (but mac compatible if possible) raid solution. Additional usb 3 support would be helpful too. For my setup i have two pc workstations and a mac mini all going into a small 5 switch 100/1000 ethernet hub. My laptop sometimes joins the network as well. One thing i considered was an additional mac mini and a thunderbolt drive as dedicated file server, but if bootcamp is installed on the mini will the pc side recognize the thunderbolt ports? Also that seems a lot more expensive than a stand alone solution, but it would double my mac rendering capabilities as well, and would be good for universal backups.
