Apart from personal preference, i think it depends on use and applications.
Generally speaking for 3d modelling, Photoshop work and AE, one could argue that a larger high res 30'er or more!  right in front of the user is preferable.
(Usually paired with a 4:3 20er in portrait for fluff).

For editing, Premiere and multitasking it would be  two 24 or smaller displays along with a broadcast display.

Jim, I like one 30" over two 27" because the mouse excursion from extreme left to right is shorter and therefore easier/faster.  And I'm able to put my broadcast display closer to my workspace, which results in less neck strain.

I have a second workstation with only a 27" display, and it feels too cramped for all my palettes and tabs in Ae and Pr by comparison.

When I worked on a 30-inch monitor a few years ago, it felt way too big...like I had to increase distance between my eyes and the screen. I preferred two 24-inch monitors (plus a video monitor) Was only on the 30-inch for three months. For those of you who use those, did you like the size right away, or did you have to get used to it?

Also, anyone here tried a  29-inch 21:9 display, such as this 2560x1080 model from Dell? $700:

Perhaps not the best solution for AE, but interesting....

You should had bought the famous IBM T221.
But now 30" 4K monitors are on their way :-)
Dell announced their models, Sharp and Asus have already launched theirs at a steep price, and Chinese Seiki has 4K 4 the masses at 39 & 50 inches (@ 30hz only due to hdmi 1.4 limitation)
The others have problems too, like windows will recognize them as two 1920x2160 displays instead of a single one..
Hopefully in a year or so these will smooth out.

I prefer one big wide high res monitor over multiple screens. And 16:10 over 16:9. But most of all I prefer large pixel count over physical size. I would love to have at least the 2560x1600 ( or 2560x1440) in a ~23" form factor :-)

Cheers
