Just got a synology 512+ for my own studio. Very very highly recommended, it is super easy to setup. Works fantastic, getting max file speeds 120 MB/s + through gigabit ethernet. Honestly I'd go that route instead of freenas, which can be a pain to setup. The synology has a ton of great extras, apps and features as well. Especially if you are looking for something easy and headache free, it is literally plug and play. I have it setup as a home media server as well with plex, which is really cool

FreeNas, -100. last time it was 35mb/sec vs fedora 12 100mb/sec.. never mind lack of GUI and other modern civilities.
just use whatever flavor of OS x will work on your machine and don't bother looking back. used G3, G4's as servers in far more reliable / less config problems than linux... and really I sort of like linux
