It's not super cheap to get into, but I'm able to get ~700MB/sec reading and writing DPX sequences off of our NASes if they're not busy (Linux to Linux via NFS.) It's eye-wateringly faster than gigE. You get fibre channel speeds without having to pay for SAN clients and metadata controllers.
