The cards are still a couple hundred bucks a piece and switches tend to be around 5 to 7 grand. It's not super cheap to get into, but I'm able to get ~700MB/sec reading and writing DPX sequences off of our NASes if they're not busy (Linux to Linux via NFS.)  It's eye-wateringly faster than gigE. You get fibre channel speeds without having to pay for SAN clients and metadata controllers.  

It looks like Netgear is making < $2K 10gig switches now, but I can't speak to their quality.
