I have the netgear gigabit GS105 - 5 port switch for this exact purpose. networks together 2 pcs, a mac mini and my synology NAS, with the 5th port is plugged directly into my router, so everything has a network connection through the LAN. it's like $30. Completely, stupidly simple, plug and play, worked first time I plugged it in, haven't thought about it since. If I need more ports I simply remove what's not being used and it auto-configures. Works great.

Hi guys - I'm having to play sys admin a little more than I like as I build out my basement studio, and just trying to dodge some mistakes.

I've not had to deal much with switches in the past - I'm curious for a small studio setup if I need a fully managed switch or if I can get by on the next level down - the "smart" switch?  They seem to have link aggregating and lots of common options configurable - but I wonder if I'm missing something vs the more expensive managed options.

Any advice?
