Also, you can change your preview resolution to be 1/2 or 1/4 on playback (but keep it at full when paused):

This makes playback smooth even under demanding conditions.

Is there a way to have Premiere Pro sort of do a RAM preview so that your project plays at least reasonably well.

I know it's hard to use an editor for perfect reviewing at normal speed but sometimes it plays fairly smooth, others not and never consistently.

I have zero effects going either.  These are tracks rendered out of AE for final render in Premiere. Very hard to get full feel for timing in AE.
