it is an effect called hyperlapse - I believe they are mostly using warp stabelization in AE, of course there is a lot more to it. You can learn more about by going to the forum at timescapes.org and searching for hyperlapse - there are several people who have mastered he technique and share a great deal of information.

Subject: [AE] stupid time-lapse tricks
http://vimeo.com/46106624
A client sent me this link, and said it was shot with a still camera, and he called it a "walking time-lapse." He wants to do something similar.
I'm wondering how the film maker got all the images to register in succession. Seems like you could do this manually in Ae, which would take forever, unless… there's some software that automates the process.
Is anybody aware of such software?
??
Jim
