Thanks for tip #1, Chris.  I didn't know that!

I've replaced many OS drives in my Mac, and not had problems with using SuperDuper to make a clone.  CCC should work as well.

In my MacPro, I have two drives for the OS; one is the working drive, the other is an "emergency" disk.  I clone often to the emergency disk (with SuperDuper), as well as a separate external disk.  Having the second internal always available has been handy for those times when I shouldn't have installed that new driver, or delete something I shouldn't have, etc.  It's simple to make the emergency the Startup Disk, and be back in business in just a few minutes.

I can also use the 2nd internal as a test drive for OS updates.
