You need a current OS. if you have a bootable OS installer disc so much the better. install SSD, boot from OS installer, install, update OS, install apps, be happy. Migration assistant will move what you really want from old OS install to new one. trying to do this otherwise is FUBAR. placing the old OS install into a USB case or docking base is fine to grab your old OS prefs / bits and go forwards with a more or less clean install.
