Byron, I agree the description of the toggle is lacking. I guess I've been on the list longer than you, but I learned many years ago, thanks to Trish Meyer, who was a constant presence at the time and Ae mentor to many, that any time you encountered strange behavior from a vector file, to try toggling that button first.

Here's another tip from a long time Ae user: If Ae starts acting strangely or not as you've come to expect, if a relaunch doesn't fix it, trash the preferences. (This advice goes for most applications; not just Ae. Pr is notorious for corrupting its own prefs.)

It's a good plan to keep a "good" set of prefs on hand just in case. Locate them, zip them up, and you're ready to refresh with a clean set at the first sign of trouble.

I suppose you could use the Cloud for that, but this works for every prior version, too.

I'd rather the Adobe engineers spent their time figuring out how to have Precomps have a twirl down to see its contents… my number one feature request I've been wanting for years.

That setting should be somewhere more obvious. Also it should say more info than just gradients. This was an issue with placed files so I would not have guessed to check it had I found it.
