For live performences we use proresLT all the time - From one MBP (with sata3 ssd) we easily mix 8 720p30 layers with blend modes with no frame drops real time. Playback of one 1080p60 should definitely be possible with proresLT. Alternatively try apple intermediate codec which is quite popular among live performers as well. Both codecs should perform better than h264 that seems to tax systems harder. The screen however can be a bottleneck as well. Can it handle true 60hz or is it running 59.94hz ? How does it process the signal internally? Are your power source 50hz or 60hz? The software VDMX is really great for controlling how the frames are being served to the screen.
