Here's a work around :)
Create a simple horizontal path as a shape layer - the width of your type block.
Make the stroke width the height of your type and apply a gradient fill across the stroke in the style you require on your type. Add a repeater and repeat the line vertically to match your type line spacing.
Then use your type layer as a matte with the shape layer underneath as the fill.
