I tried both, and while they'll both get the job done, I think with a lot of text of different sizes to create that it might actually be faster to use the Gradient Overlay in Layer Styles and break paragraphs into lines. And you don't have to change the matte every time you move a line vertically. And you can copy Layer Styles from one layer and paste them on others. I'm also discovering that putting Text Animators on text with a Gradient Overlay produces some bizarre results, as the gradient appears to be applied after say position animation, which again is a downside of the gradient being applied to the block of text rather than individual characters.
