It also played fine in QTP on my MacPro but I didn't have a MacBook to hand which is what I'll probably use for my lectures. I tried the files on my office PC and the picture breaks up badly, seemingly a failure to decode correctly. The same PC plays the H264 file OK and I think I will use this for the job. Thanks for all the input - I've learnt a lot. I didn't realise that the Apple H264 went up to 1080/60p and worked so well on an 'ordinary' laptop. One small mystery (for me) - if I jog through frames on broadcast HD video (e.g. BBC HD) which uses H264, then the GOP frames are presented out of sequence, which is apparently the way they are encoded. If I jog through these recordings they are correctly sequenced. Is that down to QTP correcting the sequence? I've been using this evolution of x264 for years. As Brian mentioned, at low bit rates, it really excels. You do have to tune the parameters, but once you find the right mix, it is probably half the bit rate at low bit rates than many of the commercial options. Also, it is a very fast and appears to be efficient across multi processors.
