Johannes Itten's "The Art of Color" is also a must-read. Also suggest getting a subscription to Communication Arts magazine (or at least going to the public library to see if they subscribe). Computer Arts is another really good hand-on magazine that is usually available at Barnes and Noble (and other better bookstores and newsstands). Is the student more interested in general basics, print. web, or motion graphics? Theory, techniques, or tools?
