Indeed, It'd be nice for AE to group all the warping tools like Nuke does.
Especially Puppet which lies in a totally different place, which could also use many elements from Nukes Spline Warp with the visible spline as well as the dotted lines that show the deviation from normal footage to the warped one.
And of course grid warp has a ton of features too.

Another real-world example of how Mesh Warp in it's current iteration didn't quite stand up: We were testing the idea of creating projections on people's faces as a post process for this Adobe spot we recently finished. Ultimately, we just shot the projections in-camera for a lot of reasons so it became a moot point, but I could have stayed in AE with a better Mesh Warp.

Not trying to beat a dead horse ... and I did submit a feature request. :)

After reading this interesting thread
I've found a video about how meshwarp works on nuke,
And talking about future improvement
In ae i think it is worth sharing.
The tutorial is here:http://youtu.be/SthlyRNXbkU

It's really smooth

Agreed! I haver numerous issues but one that's really troublesome is when the movement of the distortions aren't smooth enough, e.g. I'll drag a number of control points over time and when it rendered, the movement is herky jerky in one or two places. I'm guessing more keyframes might help but that's a hassle. Do the distortion filters have f-curves that can be manipulated by any chance? I looked but couldn't find any for the Mesh Warp but maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
