Just in case you need something more generic one day,
I developed this iExpression for such purposes:
= http://mamoworld.com/after-effects-expression/attach-cylinder-3d

Apply it to a 3D layer and it gives the x,y,z values of your layer a different meaning:
z is the radius of the cylinder and x and y move the layer along the surface of this cylinder.
This makes distributing and animating a bunch of layers on a cylinder surface as easy as animating them in 2D space.
