Now I'm trying to visualize how one might use curves and levels to access/manipulate the superbrights and superblacks in 32-bit footage... it would be nice if the basic color-correction tools could make better use of that data.

Here six - in priority order:
1. A grid that's at least half as big again as the current version. A minimum of a 256 pixels square, ie one pixel per 8 bit division, with a nicely anti-aliased curve line... all so you can see what you are doing.
2. Numeric feedback on curve points - in and out values.
3. Ability to nudge selected curve points using the arrow keys.
4. Some form of colour indication so you can immediately see if you are working in a specific channel - eg: red curve line in red channel.
5. the option to see all channel cuves in one composite view.
6. Ability to locate a point on the current curve by sampling in the comp or layer window.
